MORE ABOUT ESSENTIAL OILS AND AROMATHERAPY
What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic essences (essential oils) distilled or pressed from various parts of plants to promote balance and wellness for the mind and body. Aromatic essences are small molecules produced by the plant to help the plant thrive, especially in harsh elements and act as protection from predators. Distillation is the process of extracting these elements from the plant and producing a highly concentrated oil. These concentrated essential oils are then used through different mediums such as carrier oils, diffusers, inhalers, and balms to make them biocompatible to us. Aromatherapy is an art as well as a science which, when used safely and mindfully, can promote physical, psychological, and spiritual well being. Because essential oils are so highly concentrated, they can pose health risks if used incorrectly. Essential oil safety is something we take great care with and we do our part to educate our clients and customers about the best way to use essential oils. For example, when used properly, an essential oil diffuser is a safe and great way to get started with essential oils.
ESSENTIAL OILS HAVE BEEN USED THROUGHOUT TIME FOR THEIR MEDICINAL VALUE. HISTORY IS LADEN WITH AROMATIC PLANTS AND THEIR HEALING PROPERTIES.
In The Know Facts:
Twenty-five hundred years ago, Hippocrates, known as the father of modern medicine, stated, “The key to good health rests on having a daily aromatic bath and scented massage.”
As early as 2000 B.C., Egyptians were using essential oils for medical and beauty care. In fact, fifty ancient specially carved jars for essential oils were found in King Tutankhamun's tomb! (Thankfully, these days, you don’t have to be a king to experience the benefits of essential oils!)
One of the oldest surviving medical texts, dated around 2700 BC, belonged to Shennong, the father of Chinese medicine. It contained information on the usage of 365 plants.
Another noteworthy example of the history of essential oils is in the Old and New Testament. Here there are dozens of references to aromatic plants, with at least 12 essential oils including myrrh and frankincense.
Essential oils have been around for thousands of years and have regained popularity within recent years. With the growing concern for chemical-laden products and medicines, many have looked back to nature to bring balance in their life.
